Frequently asked questions

Does Nomadelfia want to export its model to the whole of society?

Nomadelfia is a personal vocation, which has in itself the desire to be communicated, without impositions. Our intent is not to make the whole world Nomadelfia, but to demonstrate with our works that it is possible to live the Gospel socially in everyday life. Each one, according to his or her own abilities, possibilities and sensibilities, can receive and implement Gospel values.

Nomadelfia is one of the different realities of the Church, with a specific vocation, like the other Catholic realities. Within the Church, each of us has a different mission: the principles are the same and are found in the Gospel.  Fraternity does not have a single expression, but can be lived in different ways, since each charism responds to a call from God and has its own beauty.

Is a society based entirely on the Gospel a fundamentalist society?

No. Fundamentalism is the denial of the freedom of the person before religion. Nomadelfia exists today because it is inserted in a context in which the State guarantees respect for the freedom of thought, expression and association of the person.

Moreover, the evangelical logic of universal love excludes fundamentalism a priori: the Gospel is proposed and not imposed, since it is not possible to impose, through institutions, what by its nature must be freely accepted.

State institutions must respect the principle of freedom of personal choice. Don Zeno, in a letter to La Pira, wrote: "We must not create a Christian state, but for everyone", that is, the state is and must remain secular. In fact, Nomadelfia does not deny the principle of the secularity of the State, understood as the neutrality of the State in the face of religions and the principle of subsidiarity. Precisely in order to realize more fully the freedom of personal choice, Nomadelfia is in favor of a model of secularism that respects freedom of thought, expression and religious profession, in which the person remains in the right to bring his or her own vision of justice and ethics also into the political life of the State.

What does Nomadelfia have to say to those who are atheists or those of another religion?

The founding values of Nomadelfia are also valid outside the Church, as the principles of solidarity and fraternity can be accepted even by those who do not believe.

We ask those who are atheists or agnostics to value what unites us, grasping from the experience of Nomadelfia those universal values that put man at the center; including love, fraternal union, justice, solidarity, equality, subsidiarity, which have a universal language and go beyond religion.

... What if a boy who comes of age decides to leave the community, or wants to go to university?

No one can be forced to choose a vocation if he does not feel it is his own or if he wishes to have other experiences. The young people who left Nomadelfia have had many different experiences: university, mission, volunteering, internships, work, Erasmus... And Nomadelfia will always be their family. Like all young people who go to study or work away from home, they come back to us on weekends or when they want or need to spend a while with their family.

What happens when a Nomadelfo wants to leave?

He is not required to give explanations but only to give reasonable notice, so that his duties do not remain uncovered. The community gives him the time and the means to find a job and a home.

If there is no private property, can personal items such as photos, books, mementos, clothing, etc. be kept?

Certainly yes. The ownership of houses, cars, household appliances, means of production, furniture, is communal, but one cannot live without objects of personal use. The principle of sobriety and responsible administration always applies, in the sense that everyone regulates himself in assessing whether he really needs the objects in his possession or can make them available to those who need them most.

Can you listen to music and own CDs or MP3 players?

Of course, with respect for others and the educational guidelines of the parents of the community.

Is there censorship in Nomadelfia?

No, there is free access to information and sport. Like many other parents, at Nomadelfia we have decided to limit access to films and entertainment programs that may have uneducational or violent messages, also to encourage children to play, move and live outdoors. Programs for adults are also chosen by mutual agreement, so that they can please everyone and not offend anyone's sensibilities.

Can you have a mobile phone or use the internet, social networks, e-mail accounts?

By educational choice, social media and mobile phones are accessed at the age of majority.

On the basis of what criteria are family groups formed?

Depending on the size and availability of the bedrooms, first of all, but other elements may come into play: mobility needs by elderly or disabled people, balance between families with small children and families of mature age, etc.

When and how much do you pray in Nomadelfia?

There are two moments of community prayer: the evening before going to the table, and the Sunday Mass. Being a population of families, we cannot ask of ourselves and of our children more than what is required of every lay Christian. Of course, everyone is free to find moments of personal prayer, facilitated by the presence of the chapel in the family group. However, our spirituality urges us to live every moment of life as prayer.

Are there non-Catholics or mixed couples in Nomadelfia?

They can be present as guests, but to become part of Nomadelfia as effective members it is necessary to share the foundations of life, which for us are represented by the Catholic faith.

Are all spouses obliged to take children into foster care?

Yes. Welcoming abandoned children is considered an act of justice and fraternity that is an integral part of this vocation.

Are the Nomadelfis required to pay all their assets into the common fund?

Yes, the moment you sign the constitution and become an effective Nomadelfi. The assets of the Postulants, on the other hand, are frozen until they have made a final decision regarding their vocation.

Is Nomadelfia an autarkic economy?

No, it is not and does not want to be. We must and want to relate to the outside world also from an economic point of view, buying raw materials and selling products.

Selling is a means, not the end of our lives, and the principle of universal destination of goods remains firm, as part of our production is given away to those in need. In determining the price we try to avoid speculation by adhering to some fundamental principles: the dignity of the worker, his family and respect for the law; the quality of the product, the workmanship, the material used, respect for the environment, competition, the local economy and the destination of the goods sold (is it a basic necessity? Who will be able to afford it and who will not?)

Nomadelfia and politics

Nomadelfia has not directly entered politics, it does not rely on any party or movement. However, politics is always of interest to us, as it is an activity aimed at satisfying everyone's needs. True politics is not what you see on TV, but consists in living for one's ideals, through a concrete and consistent testimony and this is what we do and propose, through unconventional but still effective channels.

Are Nomadelfi people qualified to raise children who have suffered abandonment, abuse, mistreatment or other difficulties in behavior and relationships?

The minors who arrive in Nomadelfia are entrusted by the juvenile court after an evaluation of the case and are followed by social services, which assist us with specific skills as needed. If the situation requires it, we can also call on additional support from external specialists.

Furthermore, it must be recognized that family love and the serenity of an educating environment are the indispensable elements for raising a child, even and especially if he or she comes from difficult situations. Knowledge is not enough to educate children, just as love is not enough: both are indispensable, but love must always come first and Nomadelfia can count on a rather long experience in this field.

Each child is different, there is no formula of intervention that is the same for everyone, but for each one the most appropriate path is chosen, putting the good of the child at the center.

Do the children of Nomadelfia grow up indoors?

Some ask us if, by raising children in a closed environment with the same people who have espoused the same principles, we do not risk them becoming social misfits. This thought stems from the fact that there is a tendency to give a lot of value to the plurality of educational voices and, from this point of view, the homogeneity of values would be seen as a loss of richness.

Anzitutto la nostra esperienza di ormai ottant'anni dimostra che i figli riescono generalmente ad inserirsi nella società in modo sereno e che la condivisione del modello educativo non annulla la diversità di ciascun componente della comunità.

In the family group, the child is constantly confronted with adults with different characters, different ways of approaching, behaving, imposing rules, showing their affection, etc. The change in family groups then ensures that this diversity is continuously enriched. And at school, when bullying or bullying phenomena occur or when the inclusion of a "new" creates some friction, these phenomena can be kept under control much better in an environment with greater connection between school and family.

Finally, it should be noted that many guests pass through Nomadelfia, so our children do not lack opportunities to compare and measure themselves against peers who live differently. The fact that contrasts can arise, differences of views, should not be seen as a limit, but as a formative opportunity, which is inevitable in life.

In this context, educational homogeneity becomes an asset, as it guarantees that children, while confronted with a certain diversity, grow up with a strong identity. This prepares them to face the challenges that the outside society asks of them to live as protagonists and not as misfits.

And to make them see this, we try to show that there are different schools of thought in the world, gradually and according to age. It is a considerable effort, because it requires continuous discussion, to find unified lines and at the same time highlight the motivation for our choices.

It is important to emphasize that children are not educated to become Nomadelfi, because it is a vocational and free choice. Our educational purpose is to form men and women who are able to be protagonists of their own lives, approaching problems critically, and who have made their own the values of the dignity of the person, fraternity, solidarity and justice.

Are civil values neglected in home schooling?

The home school of Nomadelfia welcomes the educational objectives of the public school, in particular the transmission of civil values such as solidarity, respect for institutions, legality, non-violence and respect for the different. These values are enriched by those typical of the Christian message, including forgiveness and love of neighbor. The possibility of enriching this teaching by transmitting other values is in any case part of the freedom of education of parents about their children, a constitutionally guaranteed right.
